First thing is that How to explain that I researched and give more creative idea what I going to tell in my paper. Also, I had to share social awareness and communities using history. Moreover, I had to make critical thinking to analyze primary source document and should know how to organize well, I think that is the most important thing in this class. Even though I had to find primary sources to produce a history, I could use my voice in my paper, which is quite significant part.

Therefore, I am not sure whether I improved anything in this class or not, but I am sure that at least I can organize, analyze, and explain what I am going to produce my idea, so I hope that I could be a creative person
What are THREE big ideas or concepts you learned this quarter?

One big idea I learned this quarter was how to do well in this discipline and what steps to take in order to do so (our first OLC). Being able to think critically and look at the different forms of history does impact your understanding. The second big idea that I learned this quarter was the impact history has made on the world today. The students from our Reading Seminar made a good point that if slaves didn't exist a lot of things would be different than they are today. Everything that has been done prior till this day has effected its surroundings in some way and if something from the past were to be taken back or non-existent, then the outcomes to a whole bunch of other things would change. It all links together. The third big idea that I learned is how to analyze a primary source. I've learned primary sources in english class, but we don't exactly analyze them the way we do in history. The PAPER method of analyzing a primary source was very helpful to me.

How can you apply them in your life?

I can use the knowledge that I've learned from how to do well in this discipline to do well in my next history class and definitely use the PAPER method to analyze sources. For the second idea that I learned, I guess I could just take the time to appreciate those before me that have impacted history and has made the world how it is today.
I have learned 2 things from history 136 class:

1). How to read a book. This section is very interesting as well as beneficial to me personally. Before, it took me very long time to read a book, newspaper, or papers; I did not know how to skim or remember all the important content. The best part in this section is, "record your thoughts about the reading rather than simply the details and contents of the reader".

2) There is a seminar movie named "Gold Rush". I really love this seminar because I have played some computer games which relate to this topic, and now I have a chance to understand this event deeply. The movie shows how the journey to find gold of American in California. In addition, I know that the people who made a lot of money were not the ones looking for gold, but the ones provides the service such as selling tools, clothes, or banking.
After study this class, I’ve learned more than just U.S History.

First, I have to admit that I learned how to write an essay in Chicago format which will be helpful in the near and far future. Even my roommate who is studying English 102 (I’m studying English 101) has to ask me how to present footnotes and endnotes in her paper. The final paper—Millennial Thinking paper—required lots of searching and citation. And I have never known any of them before. I had no idea what they were. Yet now I can quite say I am confident in writing them in the right format =)

Secondly, I’ve learned to see things in different perspectives. Before attending this class, how I was taught to learn history was memorizing and being tested how much I could learn by heart. When I heard Tom said there would be no quizzes and tests in this class, I was like “Wow, that’s COOOL!!!” Yet when the final was near, I started to be nervous. This class did not require me to memories anything. But I had to write something new about history, something that has never been discussed before. That was tough. Usually, I agreed with what was said in the textbook, especially what the TEACHERS said. “Teachers are always true”—that’s was what I was taught in Vietnam. And writing the final paper, I had to look into the argument from a totally fresh perspective, not be influenced by any other ideas. And it was a tedious work, for me. Staying up soooo late to do this really drove myself crazy =[ Anyway, I managed to finish it at last. And I felt like I was a superman. And I always remember that “don’t accept what other tell you until you can prove it”. Looking at things from different perspective can help us see new sides of the problems. From that, we can come up with solutions and ideas that we never think we will. It does not help me in history class but other aspects of life.

Last but not least, I’ve learned to judge things objectively, not by my emotional feelings. I know I made mistakes when discussing about Uncle Tom’s cabin in the reading seminar. My comments were almost about expressing my anger towards slavery. =]] Expressing my feelings and agreement/disagreement is super easy and I can do it without even think about it. However, finding the problems, the arguments implied in the text as well as looking for evidences to back up for my claim is super hard. After receiving feedback, I know I have to change or I will lose points. Now I don’t know if I can find arguments from the text correctly but I’m sure I’m much better in reading and analyze them in the sense of being objective. In real life, there are things that can only be solved by using logical ideas and critical thinking or both this and emotions. So I guess it will be helpful in the future if I know how to judge things not only by emotional feelings but also my mind.
Three things I have learned this quarter would have to be

1. How to formulate an informative historical paper that is based on elements seen throughout history and by identifying presuppositions. I also learned what the word “presupposition” even means. This will help me formulate concepts and ideas by using the primary and secondary sources available throughout history and by creating and argument that is truly my own with supporting evidence that will allow me to create strong claims while using presuppositions from historical figures of the past.

2. I have also learned how to use Chicago style formatting in my writing. This was the first time I have ever had to use anything besides MLA format and it was definitely an interesting change for me. Due to this requirement in our millennial paper I now know how to format other works in a Chicago format on Microsoft word and I now know how much easier it is than MLA formatting.

3. Thirdly I have learned the importance of formulating questions to answer while reading through any type of text. Not only does it cause the reader to think more in-depth about the events that are occurring in the reading but it also makes memorization more likely for readers once they have finished going through an excessive amount of information. This will prove helpful in any form of reading and it will prove especially helpful during the rest of my college experience.
the biggest concept i learned in this class that i can apply to my life is being able to analyze secondary sources. this will help me in other academic classes, and i can also use these skills when im reading for pleasure. the second concept i will take away from this class is being able to utilize my freedom in class to learn things i find fascinating. history classes have always been hard for me because its hard for me to keep interest when im being lectured about a lot of names and dates that have no significance to me. In this class i took advantage of the freedom i was given and focused my studies around women's rights which was something i was interested in, making my learning experience a lot more enjoyable.

2.) Another concept that I learned was how much of an impact Christianity had on American history. Although our society today is much more secular than at any other time, one cannot discount the massive impact that Christianity has played in our country's history.

3. The third big idea that I will take away from this class is that the problems our ancestors faced are not much different than the problems our society faces now in the 21st century. Whether it's the Anti-Federalists or the Tea Party calling for States' rights, or debates over expansionist policies, or the rights of minorities, we have the same debates and create new laws and policy to reflect changing societal norms.
3 big concepts I learned this quarter is perspective, chronology, and questioning.

1) When we look back at history and want to know something, we have to look at everything through the eyes of the people at that time period with their beliefs and knowledge. In this world there are many different perspectives and we can't just look at something from one perspective. Looking at something with multiple perspectives will give you a better understanding.

2) Chronology is pretty big because we must know events in a set of order and how one event could lead to another. With this we can understand why.

3) My last concept is questioning. Throughout the whole quarter we had to come up with questions. These questions were asked to have us go more in depth and in the end, get a better understanding of what is asked.

How I would use these concepts in life later on is when I get into some argument with someone I know, I can come up with QUESTIONS why this has happened and looked at the situation with their PERSPECTIVE and think of other events that could of lead to this argument.

United States History class, to be honest, I did not have the interest in studying this class at the beginning until my advisor said I had to take this class in order to graduate what so ever. However, as the quarter goes along, I realized that it is pretty impressive how this class had given me many new kinds of thoughts.

First of all, even though Thailand and the States have many differences such as the regimes or cultural perspectives; eventually, in the historical perspectives, they had shared similar event such as Slavery. These two countries had confronted such a shameful period of era when human races are measuring system to evaluate the values on humanity. At this point, I questioned myself if it was an international human nature to judge people from their classes of societies or skin colors.

Second, this class had given me the thought of how history of US could interpret the way in which United Stated of America became such a liberal country, and there is a spirit of pride towards their own history and its development. For example, from the heritage of rural Europeans who some what wanted to find a better financial opportunity or some that forced to move to the mysterious land due to their social classes (indentured servant or slave), becoming one of the most developed countries in the world is the reflect of the prideful spirit in nowadays. However, I don’t think it was right or US that they were claiming or finding the reason for that they “had a right” to take any land they want.

Last but not the least, the class had given me the perspective that United States is not a country bases on the history of one race or bases on a unique ideological view, but it is the masterpiece of the fusion from different cultures, races, and ways of thinking. The result of gathering many opinions or diversities from freedom is surely better than only one self-concentrated opinion; this is what I have learnt from the US history.

To conclude, after all the knowledge I had accomplished in the class, I acknowledge and understand the main purpose of this course and I will take my new knowledge to adapt to my life to the best that I could.
Three Big Ideas Or Concept? : hm?

• Firstly, coming to class every day and participating in in-class discussion with instructor and classmates is one of the most fundamental way to have a general view about what is history, especially “regional history” in the U.S., some important terms and definitions, as well as the perspectives of the society on certain historical themes.

• Secondly, while you are trying to read a historical article, a chapter, or even a whole book, try to break down those reading materials into smaller piece and connect some themes which are related to each other based on specific themes in order to comprehend the content of those reading materials. In addition, instead of shallowly going through all of them in a small amount of time, we better take your time and take some good notes. As a result, we are more likely to remember something you have read or studied; and you can go back and check in your notes whenever you are searching for some needed information.

• Another way to understand some long historical texts or complicated documents like “The Project Gutenberg EBook of A Brief Account of the Destruction of the Indies”, we should analyze some important details, brainstorm, make a timeline, give some picture or even mental map about the events that happened in a specific period of time.

• Last but not least, one of the most interesting and fun method to simplify and visualize what happened in the past – called “HISTORY” – is to read historical comic books. This used to be my way to solve my problem in studying history when I was in Vietnam. This webpage illustrates my tips to study history. I’m so sorry about the linguistic inconvenience. But these kinds of comics really help me a lot in improving my general knowledge about history.

FORM: What kinds of performances are acceptable and meaningful demonstrations of competency in this discipline?

From my perspective, history is sort of an important discipline in college education system. I used to suffer from the terrible time of tedious and strict teaching method of Vietnamese education system. In other words, we have to memorize all the dates, important details, historical terms, and many events taken place in the past. Consequently, I lose my interest in learning history; and of course it resulted in bad academic results ultimately. However, when I came to America, what have impressed me the most are the totally different teaching styles of academic staff here and the useful learning guidance in order to help students have a better chance to appreciate the value of history, specifically American history which I have been taking since this spring quarter. The deeper I can dig into the issue existed in some considerable turning point of American history, such as Civil War, the better I can understand what happened in the past. Furthermore, it could be a really good chance for me to state my personal thought about some groundbreaking themes like slavery, racism, and the like. By manipulating an abundance of sources like books, classrooms, exhibits, films, historic sites, legal memoranda, testimony, and many other ways, many historians are able to conduct researches or projects. Thus, later historians can base on all these significant and qualified sources to have better and stronger evidences to perform this particular discipline. For example, interpretations of texts or events, analysis of case studies or empirical evidence, artistic designs are parts of the process of demonstrating the competency in this discipline.

KNOWLEDGE: What concepts, accepted findings, and expert perspectives are essential to be able to perform effectively in this discipline?

• Concepts: “Many had become accustomed to think of the historical past in terms of narratives, sequences and dates.” As a student, in order to organize underlying knowledge and personal thoughts about history, to distinguish the differences, to find the similarities and patterns, and to build up connections, we should concentrate on emphasizing critical and key historical concepts. There are two main kinds of concepts – 1st order concepts and 2nd order concepts.

 1st order concepts are to understand historical trends and patterns, as well as specific events. (Revolution, Civil War, welfare, colonies …)

 2nd order concepts, which are more technical, is to understand how historians make progress, what they are fond of and desire for, as well as how historical knowledge and understanding is constructed and created. (continuity and change, cause and effect, chronology, theme, and the use of evidence …)

• Expert Perspectives: It is absolutely crucial to have expert perspectives in order to demonstrate how historians make a statement, a truth, or even their personal opinion about a particular event that happened previously which still has a subsequent effect in the present time.

METHODS: What methods do practitioners in the field use to build and validate knowledge in this discipline?

“Evidence (sources) is used by historians to come to a balanced judgment on issues that concern them. The use of evidence forms the bedrock of research.” There are two sorts of evidence – primary evidence and secondary evidence – which is both used by many historians in order to cross-reference all their used sources to get a balanced point of view as well as undergo the process of making the finished production reliable.

Primary evidence is evidence that actually comes from the time being studied in the question. Take “Titanic”, as a prime example. The real “Titanic” ship accident, the memories of survivors would be primary evidence

Secondary evidence is the opposite of primary that does not come from the time being studied. The recent film is secondary evidence

PURPOSES: What are the possible uses of this disciplinary knowledge? What does this kind of inquiry affords us?

From my own point of view, history is not only a discipline, but also an endless process of searching for the past and its meaning. When we start learning history, we learn the people’s daily life, science, art, politics, military affairs, and so on. From what we learn, we can extract the experience and use for our future life. It means that you can choose to be a historian as an official profession if you are really interested in history.
Knowledge:

What concepts, accepted findings, and expert perspectives are essential to be able to perform effectively in this discipline?

To gain knowledge in history is to study. Study what? Sources! A concept that is essential in history is the notion that with validated sources, is the possibility that the history one could be learning is wrong. That what is fact could be fiction, because we were not there to experience it (history/historical event) firsthand. Correlated with the last notion is the ability to interpret and deduce. Since historical sources may not provide the whole picture/story, people or historians have to be able to interpret the evidence they were able to find and deduce what it means or where it could lead. Lastly, an interesting quote, “History tells us more about the person who wrote it than about the people being written about” (Carr).

Methods:

What methods do practitioners in the field use to build and validate knowledge in this discipline?

Methods used to validate history can be scientific such as the use of forensics and or carbon dating. Research is important in that you can look at records (plural is key) from the time period to validate what one believed happened, did happen, or at least it was recorded. (examples are hieroglyphs & diaries). To cross reference is also important in being able to validate something.

What are the possible uses of this disciplinary knowledge? What does this kind of inquiry affords us?

A possible use of history is being able to learn from past mistakes! History also allows people to learn about individuals and societies. We can also see how societies formed and how they changed over time. History can also help shape one’s moral compass, in that we see many great acts of self sacrifice over the course of history, because doing such a great act deserves recognition, and is why it is kept intact over time. Individuals can also gain a better understanding of their identity through history. Kind of like the saying, "If you want to know where we are going, ask us where we've been."

Competency in History means the ability of individuals to understand History rather than to memorize historical facts and learn superficially. Once one understands History one is able to recognize the patterns through which societies around the world have been structured. To understand History refers to find meaning in the concept of humanity and the path humans have drawn over the time. After understanding History one is able to picture out the most important ideas, events, trends, ideals, etc. from any age of the time in order to work out that information and come up with the answers towards the standing inquires about the effect of the past over the present and the future. Finally, at the point one understands History, one is able to distinguish this discipline from similar others (Sociology, Anthropology).

One demonstrates competency in this discipline by reflecting the gathered understanding in written essays; while doing research and developing discussions on historical matters; by using critical thinking to analyze present situations (news) with root on historical issues; by predicting the future basing on the evidence from the past. Above all, competency in History is also found in how we use this understanding and apply it to our own lives so that we define a part of our identities as individuals and communities that would remain hidden if we were ignorant of our History.

What concepts, accepted findings, and expert perspectives are essential to be able to perform effectively in this discipline?

To be successful in studying history, there are 4 tips to follow.

1. First understand and then memorize: This will create a very strong-root-memory. When you truly understand something, it tends to stick in your mind longer than just memorize information in your brain.

2. The reasons behind the event: This will automatically create the “imaginary flowchart” which will connect events together; it organizes your memory.

3. Learning and understanding the consequences that followed the events: It helps to relate events and put it more organized, which is the key to learn history.

4. Summarize: This is a process when you review what you understand or what you have learned, which “you not only reframe the event in your own words but also you are preparing valuable notes for your examination”.

What methods do practitioners in the field use to build and validate knowledge in this discipline?

Historians use sources to answer questions in which they must sort though evidence and choose the important and trustworthy one to come up with concluding facts. Sometimes information turns out to be false so historians have to be continuously willing to revise the information gathered and change it if necessary. The main target of the historian is to provide the most verdict knowledge of the History; following that aim the most important tools a historian has are primary sources, secondary sources, and oral histories. From this he/she will subtract the main evidence to build and validate knowledge.

What are the possible uses of this disciplinary knowledge? What does this kind of inquiry affords us?

There are many possible uses of History. For example, history helps us to understand people and society; it explains how we became who we are and how we behave the way we do in relation to our past. History addresses the change of society throughout the time and thus, by using it people are able to know the way society has structured itself and what direction it is taking.

According to Peter N. Stearns from American Historical Association, “it offers the only extensive evidential base for the contemplation and analysis of how societies function;” moreover he explains that, by being aware of the history, people knows how “to run their own lives.”

Methods: What methods do practitioners in the field use to build and validate knowledge in this discipline?

Besides collaboration and proofreading among fellow historians in analysing the primary sources of their historical contexts, close scrutiny of secondary sources help in validating knowledge in history. Bearing in mind that history is often written by the 'winners', investigative work on differing perspectives is also a vital method when creating history.

Purposes: What are the possible uses of this disciplinary knowledge? What does this kind of inquiry affords us?

Without a doubt certain history stories prove to be interesting reads. We learn how things came to be today and through this we would learn about ourselves. History teaches us how to analyze and explain problems in the past, making it an outlet that instills problem-solving skills that would be useful in the present and future. "Any career that rewards clear thinking, good writing, articulate speaking, and the ability to ask and answer complicated questions about how the world works will be open to a well-trained history major."

In brief, we can learn a diversity of cultures, especially American culture, and know more about the origin of their own cultures.

While some events in history remain unknown, historians can create a hypothesis based on what has already been discovered, researching known information, and making self-discoveries to support their theories and ideas.

History is a contest of memory, study in the past. They must find evidence about the past, ask questions of that evidence, and come up with explanations that make sense of what the evidence says about the peoples, events, places, and time periods under consideration. Because it is impossible for a single historian to study the history of all peoples, events, places, and time periods, historians develop specialties within the discipline. Historians may study the history of particular groups of people (e.g. women’s history or African-American history), they may study particular events (e.g. history of the Vietnam War or the Crusades), they may study the history of a single country or region (e.g. Pacific Northwest history or Chinese history), or they may confine their interest to a limited time period (e.g. early American history or Medieval history).
